It has been about six months since the country has started a quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Being stuck at home where social interaction is limited only to family members, that, if one is living with his/her family, it is worse on people living alone, – a period this long might have had negative effects on people, especially psychologically. But, thanks to random gimmicks that people had invented, especially those on the internet, the long quarantine seemed bearable.
Thanks to these various internet social media platforms that give us solace as we’re being caged in our homes. With these dance trends on TikTok, photo challenges on Instagram, and random silliness on Facebook, all the crazy online stuff everywhere, we manage to stay home without breaking our nutshells.
As a millennial, I myself also took a part on one of these internet craze. Though, usually shy, I stepped into the spotlight and embarrassed myself in front of the camera, scraping off the thinnest layers of dignity left on my skin, to film myself industrial dancing.
Back in the days, global industrial dance projects by members of the industrial dancers’ community were not uncommon on the internet. Actually, I’d joined two projects from five or six years ago. We would summon industrial dancers from every corner of the globe to film themselves dancing, to have the clips compiled in a single video which would then be published on YouTube.
However, even the industrial dance/music was, and is now still, not quite popular and haven’t reached the mainstream, such projects were participated by fabulous people from the continent of America to the stretches of East Asia and down to Australia.
Like this “Binibining Marikit” dance, taking part of this industrial dance project gives you a sense of accomplishment and a sense of belonging. It helps you endure the feeling of isolation while in home quarantine during this pandemic. Since movements around and across towns are restricted and limited, while some undergo total lockdowns, physical social interactions are cut off. Since human is a social animal, it seems like a great part that makes us human has been taken away by this plague. But having such internet gimmick, we manage to weave interconnectedness to others.
If you are so curious about this industrial dance that I am talking about, not for showing off, just attention-whoring, hehe, here it is.
There are also a lot of good dancers out there. You may enter on the search box on YouTube the keywords “COVID industrial dance” to find out more videos.
I know this is quite bizarre since industrial music is an underground scene, but I hope you enjoy watching and share us what internet craze are you up and in to during this COVID-19 crisis.
